Calluna Ericaceae Shear off last year's flowered shoots in spring or it goes bare and leggy. Camellia Theaceae Buds drop if the rootball dries out in autumn or it's kept too warm in winter. Carmona Boraginaceae The Fukien tea is sensitive to both drying out and cold drafts. Carpinus Betulaceae As a hedge it keeps its dry leaves until spring, giving winter screening. Cedrus Pinaceae Loves full sun and sharp drainage; tie the leader to a cane while young. Chaenomeles Rosaceae Its fragrant autumn fruits make excellent jelly. Chamaecyparis Cupressaceae As bonsai, shape it by pinching rather than scissors – cut scale leaves turn brown. Citrus Rutaceae Overwinter bright and cool (5–12 °C); hard water causes yellow leaves (iron deficiency). Cornus Cornaceae On coloured-stem kinds remove the oldest stems in spring – young stems colour best. Cotoneaster Rosaceae Superb as bonsai – its tiny leaves and red berries stay in proportion at small size. Crataegus Rosaceae Drought-tolerant and great as an urban hedge; as bonsai it can be pruned hard in spring. Cryptomeria Cupressaceae It turns bronze in winter and greens up again in spring – this is not a disease.
