Caladium Araceae Foliage dies back in autumn: store the tuber dry at 15–18 °C and restart it in spring. Calathea Marantaceae Wants soft (rain or filtered) water; brown leaf edges mean dry air or hard water. Calendula Asteraceae Keep picking off spent flowers and it blooms until frost. Calluna Ericaceae Shear off last year's flowered shoots in spring or it goes bare and leggy. Camellia Theaceae Buds drop if the rootball dries out in autumn or it's kept too warm in winter. Campanula Campanulaceae Regular deadheading often brings a second flush of flowers later in summer. Canna Cannaceae Lift the rhizomes after the first frost and store them dry at 5–10 °C. Capsicum Solanaceae Chillies can be overwintered: cut back in autumn and keep bright at 12–15 °C. Carmona Boraginaceae The Fukien tea is sensitive to both drying out and cold drafts. Carpinus Betulaceae As a hedge it keeps its dry leaves until spring, giving winter screening. Carum Apiaceae A biennial – leaves in the first year, flowers and seed in the second summer. Cattleya Orchidaceae Needs plenty of light; let the bark dry out between waterings. Cedrus Pinaceae Loves full sun and sharp drainage; tie the leader to a cane while young. Celosia Amaranthaceae Cold-sensitive – plant out only after mid-May and avoid waterlogging. Cephalocereus Cactaceae Never spray or wash the white "hair" – water mats it and leaves stains. Cephalotus Cephalotaceae The Albany pitcher plant likes cool roots – a clay pot watered from below. Cereus Cactaceae A vigorous columnar cactus whose large white flowers open at night. Ceropegia Apocynaceae String of hearts propagates easily from its aerial tubers and stem cuttings.
